Historic Preservation

Within the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties there are Standards for four distinct approaches to the treatment of historic properties: preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and reconstruction. These distinct approaches are presented from the least intervention to the most intervention.

In partnership with garden owners, gardeners, communities, horticulturists, garden designers, and historians, we work to preserve outstanding gardens across America. We help new and emerging public gardens become community-based public resources by drawing upon the expertise from our own dedicated staff as well as that of our network of experts in all aspects of garden design, management, and restoration. We also contribute to the welfare of existing public gardens, helping them manage both natural and manmade challenges to their survival.

Projects fall into a number of interrelated, thematic areas, including:
Archaeological Site Conservation and Management, Building Materials,
Conservation Principles and Methods,
Decorated Surfaces, Historic Cities and Urban Settlements, Modern Architecture, Recording and Documentation.

What makes the concept of World Heritage exceptional is its universal application. World Heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located.

The first preservation tool of its kind developed specifically for Long Island, the map-based interface empowers public users to research local landmark laws in Nassau and Suffolk Counties by addressing the following questions:
Does my municipality have a local landmark law?
What are my local landmark laws and where can I find them in my municipal code?
Who are my local landmark officials and how do I contact them?

This viewer contains a set of property maps of every parcel within the County of Nassau. The public information contained herein is furnished as a public service by Nassau County for use as a research tool.

This cross-section of the country demonstrates the richness and diversity of architecture and building practice across many centuries, from mud brick to steel, from ancient cliff dwellings to contemporary office towers—a history that unfolds in individual building entries and thematic essays written by leading architectural historians who survey and explain styles and typologies, materials and techniques, and social and political contexts, from local to state to national levels.
