This session will help you: become familiar with the history of papermaking, and how this process effects longevity; understand the materials and structures that make up paper-based collections; explore the interaction of component materials and the role of external factors in deterioration; learn what to look for when evaluating the general condition of your collections’ and identify additional resources to help you learn more about the mechanisms of deterioration.

Broadsides have been used throughout history as posters, announcements for news or events, or as advertisements. Usually printed on one side, they were popular from the 16th through the 19th centuries. Produced on poor quality paper, they were intended as temporary documents.

The Image Permanence Institute is a department of the College of Art and Design at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
