Understanding OneSearch Items

Items in Search Results

After searching, OneSearch will display a "brief record" for each item, showing key information like title, author, type of work, availability, and date of publication, as well as quick links to view or download the material if available. You may also take advantage of other OneSearch features here, such as the ability to save a record to your favorites, to email the item to yourself, or to download citation information.

If you are certain that you have found the item you are looking for, you may need not go any further than this brief summary to begin your research. However, to find out more about an item you may click on the title to reveal the full bibliographic record.

Detailed Item View

Clicking on the title of an item in a search will take you to the full item record showing all the information the Library has about the item, as well as providing more detailed information about locations and ways to access the work. This view consists of several components, which are also listed in the sidebar navigation for convenience. Note that the kinds of information displayed will vary, and not every section will be available for every item.

  • Top: The main bibliographic information such as title, authors/creators, publisher, year of publication, and availability information. In many cases you may download the item as PDF directly from this area.
  • Send To: Options to save the item to a reading list, export to a citation manager such as Zotero or Mendeley, or share a link with a colleague.
  • Get It: If it is a physical item, information about location in the library, loan options (including Interlibrary Borrowing), and request for digitization.
  • Search Inside: Search for articles within a journal (only available for journals)
  • View Online: If the work is available in electronic form, one or more links will provide access. These links typically take you to a vendor platform such as EBSCOHost, ProQuest Ebook Central, or a journal publisher site where the works are hosted.
  • Details: Complete bibliographic information, including things like page counts, subject headings, contents descriptions, and identifiers such as ISBN (books), ISSN (periodicals), or DOIs (digital objects). Authors and subjects may be clickable to reveal other works with shared authorship or subject matter.
  • Links: Additional links to the work, e.g., on an external site.
  • Citations: Some works will display information on other works that either cite or are cited by this work, with clickable "citation trail" links.
  • Virtual Browse: A selection of works that may be related to the item, e.g., by a shared author or subject.
