An introductory guide to using Archives and Special Collections at Adelphi University.

Welcome!

Welcome to Adelphi Archives and Special Collections

The purpose of an Archive is to preserve and make available the history of an institution through its collection of artifacts, correspondence, documents, manuscripts. photographs and many other formats of enduring value.

This website represents the wealth of materials held at Adelphi University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) and introduces additional resources. Housed in the repository are collections about the history of Adelphi from its inception as a small liberal arts college in Brooklyn, New York in the late 19th century to its current status as one of the most prominent universities in the greater New York Metropolitan Area. The materials range in scope from small scrapbooks donated by alumni to watercolor renditions of its celebrated Swirbul Library designed by Richard Neutra.

Special Collections includes library materials in various formats, which are separately housed in a secure environment to protect and preserve rare, valuable, or fragile items. In addition to large Rare Book and Americana Collections, there are also thematic collections, such as the Children’s Illustrated Literature Collection, the Panama Canal Collection and the Spanish Civil War Collection.

UASC also has Digital Collections available via our website. Here you can find images, articles, maps, and other material from both Archives and Special Collections.
