Improving Your Search Strategy

After you have done some background reading and formulated your research question it is time to begin searching in some of our databases for articles.  This tutorial will help you learn how to select keywords and improve your search strategy.

Search Strategy Builder

Use the Search Strategy Builder to help you create your own search string.  Enter the appropriate keyword or phrase that represents each concept or the main idea you wish to search. Remember to include any synonyms for each concept as well.

If you are using a general all subject database remember to include the words "social work" or "social services" or "social sciences as one of your concepts. This will insure that results are relevant to to social work.
