About CSE

The Council of Science Editors (CSE) published the Scientific Style and Format Eighth Edition in 2014.  This authoritative manual recommends on scientific style for publications in life and physical sciences.    It also provides directive how to cite various publications (books, journals, DVDs, websites) in different formats (e.g., print, online, audiovisual) in the text and references. Swirbul Library has the Scientific Style and Format Eighth Edition in print (Ref T 11. S386 2014).

The Scientific Style and Format Eighth Edition has 32 chapters that are grouped in 4 parts. “Part 1 provides an overview of important issues related to scientific publication, including editorial practices and copyright. Part 2 covers conventions widely applied in both general and scientific scholarly publishing. Part 3 covers details of style mainly applicable in the sciences.“ Part 4 discusses about technical elements of publications in chapters 27-32.  For a summarized version of the CSE recommended formats for bibliographic citations and references , consult AU Libraries LibGuide entitled CSE Manual for Scientific Style and Format.
