A guide to resources and best practices for citation, academic integrity, plagiarism and bibliographic management. This guide includes information on citing resources in APA, Chicago/Turabian, CSE, and MLA styles.

Properly citing sources is an important part of scholarly writing. University Libraries are here to help you understand how to cite sources and to provide you with citation tools to make proper citing easier.

Citation Styles

Different disciplines use different citation styles to credit scholarly works. The most common citation styles are APA, MLA, and Chicago/Turabian Styles. It is important to cite properly in order to avoid plagiarism and to give authors credit for their work.

APA Style

APA (American Psychological Association) style is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences.

MLA Style

MLA (Modern Language Association) style is most commonly used to cite sources within liberal arts and the humanities.

Chicago Style

Chicago Manual of Style has two methods of citation. Notes and bibliography style is common in the humanities, including literature, history and the arts. Author-date style is common in the physical, natural and social sciences.

Turabian Style

Turabian style has two methods of citation. Notes and bibliography style is common in the humanities, including literature, history and the arts. Author-date style is common in the physical, natural and social sciences.

CSE Style

CSE (Council of Science Editors) style is commonly used in the sciences, including physical and life science.

Citation Tools

Citation management tools such as Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, and PaperPile allow you to collect, organize, cite, and share information about works relevant to your research. They also allow you to generate bibliographies and in-text citations. Some systems can even be configured to connect directly to journals and other online resources seamlessly via Adelphi Libraries’ resolver service. Remember that you should always double-check citations before submitting your work.
